Before the Market Wakes

2025Türkiye

The street outside is loud by ten in the morning. At five it is mostly the sound of shutters, and of crates being set down carefully so the fruit at the bottom is not bruised.

This sequence follows one narrow lane from the moment the light reaches the roofline to the moment someone stops to ask a price. Nothing here was arranged. The photographs were made across four mornings, in the order the mornings happened.

The sequence

  1. 01The PlaceWhere are we?
  2. 02The PersonWho are we meeting?
  3. 03The EnvironmentHow does this person live or work?
  4. 04The ActionWhat are they doing?
  5. 05The DetailWhat reveals something important?
  6. 06The RelationshipHow do people interact?
  7. 07The Quiet MomentWhat happens between obvious moments?
  8. 08The Closing ImageWhat feeling should remain?

01The Place

A market lane seen end to end, light on the upper wall only.

The lane runs east, so the light reaches the top of the wall first and arrives at the ground about twenty minutes later.

02The Person

A shopkeeper raising a metal shutter with one shoulder.

Temporary photograph · Aravind P.S · Pexels License

The shutter goes up in one motion, with a shoulder rather than a hand — the same way, at the same hour, every morning.

03The Environment

The inside of a narrow shop, stock stacked to the ceiling.

Temporary photograph · Kenneth Surillo · Pexels License

A wooden stool behind a counter, worn smooth on one side.

Behind the counter there is room for one person and a stool. The stock reaches the ceiling and is arranged by how often it is needed, not by size.

04The Action

Two people lifting crates from the back of a van in the lane.

Crates come off the van in pairs. The count is spoken out loud, once, and not written down.

05The Detail

A price written in marker on a piece of cardboard, corrected twice.

Temporary photograph · Ana Gonzalez · Pexels License

A price written on the back of a cardboard box, corrected twice.

06The Relationship

A thermos passed across a lane between two shop doorways.

Temporary photograph · Adedire Abiodun · Pexels License

Two people standing in facing doorways, cups in hand.

Temporary photograph · Heinz Boerder · Pexels License

A thermos crosses the lane twice before either shop is open.

07The Quiet Moment

For about ten minutes after the deliveries stop, nobody in the lane is doing anything in particular.

An empty lane with open shops and no customers yet.

Temporary photograph · Emilio Sánchez Hernández · Pexels License

Everything here happens twice: once for the people who work in the lane, and an hour later for everyone else.

08The Closing Image

The same lane, full of people, in flat mid-morning light.

Temporary photograph · Iban Lopez Luna · Pexels License

By seven the lane is full and the light is flat. The morning is over, in the way that matters here.

Field notes

  • Photographed across four mornings. TODO(content): confirm the dates.
  • Consent explained in person before photographing; identification preference recorded for each subject.

A short call is usually enough to work out whether a place, a schedule and a set of permissions can hold a story like this one.
